How IITs have adopted NEP 2020, including early exit facility and interdisciplinary courses

With the goal of making education widely accessible from the primary to secondary levels, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 went into effect on June 29, 2020. We examine how some of the top institutions have incorporated the same in their curricula and policies as the nation marks the third anniversary of the new education policy.

IIT Hyderabad

IIT Hyderabad has implemented Fractal Academics, or courses with credits ranging from 0.5 to 3, in keeping with NEP 2020, allowing students to get both breadth and depth in the disciplines of their choosing. The university has guaranteed that all UG programs would include 10% of liberal arts in the curriculum and that students will be able to acquire credits from other institutions.

In addition, the institute has embraced the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) program. For all integrated masters programs, which total 19 programs, multiple entry and exit facilities are being established. IIT Mandi

IIT Mandi has created interdisciplinary research institutions including the Centre for AI and Robotics (CAIR) and the Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Applications Centre (IKSMHA). The institution states that this has led to the creation of new courses at the Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels that are in line with the NEP's emphasis on multidisciplinary education. As a result, in the past two years, the IIT Mandi has added three new multidisciplinary programs:

– MBA (AI & DS)

– BTech in General Engineering

– BTech in Mathematics and Computing

IIT Jodhpur

IIT Jodhpur has also introduced a few multidisciplinary courses under NEP 2020, such as BS in Physics (with specialization) and BS in Chemistry (with specialization), in addition to offering numerous entry and departure possibilities.

The institute argued that by "aligning with the National Education Policy and IIT Jodhpur's vision of holistic student development, these uniquely blended programs, the Institution is positioned as a leading force at the intersection of science and technology."

Several new interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary academic organizations, including schools, centers, and interdisciplinary research platforms, have also been launched by the institute.

Gandhinagar IIT

As part of NEP 2020, the institute has also launched new interdisciplinary centers in the fields of archaeology, biomedical engineering, sustainable development, design and innovation, creative learning, and safety. It has also given students access to international experiences through industry/academic research internships, made a social impact through outreach initiatives, and provided financial aid to deserving students.

Additionally, IITGN will now give the graduating students a USB with their verifiable digital mark sheets, diplomas, and medal certificates so they may view it from anywhere.

Bombay IIT

Flexibility, in the opinion of IIT Bombay, is crucial to NEP 2020. "Students therefore have a lot of leeway in selecting courses from different areas. He added that IIT Bombay would provide an option to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering after the third year. 15 kids chose it when it was offered as a trial last year.

The IIT council decided to start this facility so the students who are not able to complete the four-year degree offered by the IIT will be able to have an honourable exit with this new degree,” he said.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

BHU has regulated the Academic Bank of Credit system under NEP 2020, and encouraged more students to join the platform. The total registration on ABC Portal for session 2021-22 is 14900 and 15722 for 2022-23, the institute stated. Additionally, the newly admitted students are mandatorily advised to mention ABC at the time of filling out the online enrolment form/ examination’s the university’s portal.Additionally, the institute is optimistic that it will be able to execute the four-year program starting with the 2024–25 academic session, even though multi-level entry and exit are currently established in several of the vocational programs.

Trans-disciplinary Research Promotion Scheme, a new BHU program that offers various new funding opportunities in line with NEP 2020, has just been introduced. The university has also started two diploma programs and nine postgraduate programs in multidisciplinary fields like Agricultural Journalism, Urban & Regional Studies, Gender Studies, Acute Stroke Care, Wild Life & Health Management, Oceanography, Structural and Chemical Biology, Industrial Chemistry, and Instrumentation Techniques and Application. Additionally, the university offers 457 SWAYAM and NPTEL programs.Additionally, the university has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with at least 15 foreign institutions, including Tokyo University in Japan, Seoul National University in South Korea, University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, University of Surry in the United Kingdom, University of Bucharest in Romania, University of Kyoto in Japan, Karlstad University in Sweden, and Georgia University in the United States.

Kanpur IIT

To serve both students and working professionals, the institute offers a number of online courses and eMasters degree programs. The Shivani Centre for the Nurture and Re-integration of Hindi and Other Indian Languages offers multilingual study resources, in accordance with NEP, to students who are experiencing language problems to help them integrate smoothly into the IIT milieu.

Also emphasizing student entrepreneurship policy is IIT Kanpur.consistent with NEP 2020. Students are given the option to pursue entrepreneurship by signing up for "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Credits" or by dropping a semester.

With double majors, minors, dual degrees, and master's degrees in several subjects, the institute is now also encouraging flexibility. According to the institute, new degree options, such as Honours degrees and interdisciplinary programs called Social Sciences, Communication, Humanities, Economics, Management, and Environment (SCHEME), were introduced to offer a comprehensive and multidisciplinary educational experience that transcends traditional boundaries.

Additionally, the institute is establishing new departments in interdisciplinary fields like cognitive science, design, and engineering for space, planetary, and astronomical sciences.Together with the future Gangwal School of Medical Sciences & Technology, these newly created departments demonstrate NEP's emphasis on interdisciplinary education and research cooperation.and innovation," according to the institute.

Thiruvananthapuram IISER

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM) is incorporating NEP 2020 into its course structure by attempting to remove barriers between the arts, sciences, curricular and extracurricular activities, etc. to make education truly holistic and to create well-rounded individuals, the institute claims. To achieve this, the BS-MS program's course structure has been revised to enable students to credit a greater number of courses in subjects outside of their particular specializations. This has allowed for the enrichment of the curriculum with courses in the humanities, arts, social sciences, etc.

Additionally, IISER TVM introduced a tenure-track system for new faculty members two years ago as required by the NEP 2020, providing the necessary impetus foryoung faculty members to succeed in both research and teaching.

Madras IIT

IIT Madras has provided a number of opportunities to foster students' entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking in line with NEP 2020. These include the Nirmaan pre-incubator and the Center for Innovation (CFI), which promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

According to the institute, the university is putting NEP 2020 into practice through a number of programs like the BS Degree in Data Science and Applications and the Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) program. According to officials, "the distinctive features of these programs include varied entry and exit options, offering a change of discipline, and enabling Humanities specialization for Technical students."

IIT Madras is additionally listed in the Central Higher Education Institution category of the Academic Bank of Credits Portal. how manyas 491 IIT Madras students have signed up for the same.

Delhi IIT

The Institute has started the following programs in keeping with NEP 2020's goal, which emphasizes transdisciplinary higher education.

Additionally, the Institute has launched the following schools and centers dedicated to multidisciplinary research:
